Myocardial Fibrosis Seen in Competitive Male Triathletes

In the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Dr. Jitka Starekova from University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany pointed out that competitive male triathletes may be at increased risk for non-ischemic myocardial fibrosis which may later lead to heart failure and arrhythmia. The authors found evidence of non-ischemic myocardial fibrosis, detected by late-gadolinium-enhancement cardiac MRI, in the left ventricle in men but in none of the women included in this study.
