Regular Dental Care May Reduce the Risk of Incident Ischemic Stroke Associated With Periodontal Disease

This study looked at the periodontal health of 6736 patients, who were divided into seven categories of periodontal disease, from perfectly normal to severe disease and tooth loss. The results showed that all of the disease categories were associated with higher rates of stroke when compared with the perfectly normal group who had no periodontal disease. There is a significant association between periodontal disease and the risk of cardioembolic and thrombotic stroke. This risk may be reduced by accessing regular dental care.
