Risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation in patients with higher levels of free thyroxine

Christine Baumgartner (Bern University Hospital, Switzerland) and co-authors published an article in Circulation in October 2017, about the increased risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation in patients with higher levels of free thyroxine (FT4), but within the normal range. The investigators collected data from 30,085 patients age 40 or older, from 11 prospective cohort studies. Higher FT4 levels may be a risk factor for adverse cardiac events and may be useful to evaluate the risk of atrial fibrillation.
