New oral anticoagulants are associated with an increased risk of bleeding

New oral anticoagulants are associated with an increased risk of bleeding, if they are administered together with some drugs, such as amiodarone. This was the conclsuion of a study published in JAMA in October 2017. Shang-Hung Chang et al have found that among 91,330 patients in Taiwan, the risk of major bleeding was significantly increased with concurrent use of amiodarone, fluconazole, rifampin, or phenytoin, compared with NOAC use alone. Therefore, the physicians should carefully consider the therapeutic schemes of patients receiving new oral anticoagulants, in order to avoid harmful drug-drug interactions.
