Normal LDL-Cholesterol Levels Are Associated With Subclinical Atherosclerosis in the Absence of Risk Factors

Patients from PESA (Progression of Early Subclinical Atherosclerosis) study without conventional cardiovascular risk factors (smoking, untreated high blood pressure, elevated fasting glucose, LDL cholesterol >160 mg/dL, or HDL cholesterol <40 mg/dL) were studied in order to see if they had any atherosclerosis. The researchers used ultrasound to look at the carotid, iliofemoral, and abdominal aorta for plaques and for artery calcification and found subclinical atherosclerosis in 49.7% of the participants who had no obvious risk factors.
