Dementia is a syndrome characterized by the impairment of memory, thought, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities.
It is one of the major causes of disability and dependence among the elderly worldwide, impacting physically, psychologically, socially and economically not only on the patient but also on the families, caregivers and society. Worldwide, 47.5 million people have dementia and there are 7.7 million new cases each year.
This paper aims to present in a succinct manner this disease, its consequences upon family and society and the more important palliative approaches.
