Risk Factor Variability and Cardiovascular Outcome

Variability of the cardiovascular risk factors has been demonstrated to be a powerful predictor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, end-stage renal disease, and dementia. This is true for blood pressure, LDL-cholesterol, glycemia, and body weight, but not heart rate. Treatment should focus not only on reduction of absolute values, but also on their variability.
