Contrarily to other malignancies which remain asymptomatic for a long period of time, urothelial bladder cancer can be identified in an early stage of the disease due to the strong impact of the symptoms on the general condition of the patient.
Even if a curative treatment is performed as a first step procedure, the risk of recurrence remains important, an active follow-up protocol being needed. While the role of cystoscopy and of other imagistic studies remains well established, the use of serum tumor markers is still a matter of debate.
