The history of Marburg virus and bioethical challenges in high-risk pathogen research

The Marburg virus is a lethal virus mainly found in sub-Saharan Africa. Although its reported epidemic outbreaks are a few, its clinical consequences constitute a medical threat, because of its severe clinical manifestations and high mortality rate. Its virulence has been the subject of extensive scientific investigation, particularly in laboratory settings, where researchers have studied its transmission mechanisms, pathogenicity, and potential public health implications. The current article discusses the main clinical characteristics of the virus, as well as its epidemic history and present. It also examines past scientific efforts to understand the virus through laboratory research, alongside comparisons with other high-risk infectious agents in the context of epidemic preparedness and response.
Keywords: Marburg virus, history of medicine, bioethics, filovirus, biodefense.
