Introduction. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rarely achieve glycemic control. In the presence of liver or renal comorbidities, many patients are anxious related to over medication with numerous classes of antidiabetic drugs and rather prefer usage of herbal supplements. Herbal supplements, such as Momordica charantia (bitter melon), have been studied for their potential to complement standard antidiabetic treatments. This case report illustrates the efficacy and safety of adding Momordica charantia to conventional therapy for achieving glycemic targets in a T2DM patient.
Case presentation. We present the case of a 65-year-old female with a 6-year history of T2DM, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Despite initial improvements in glycemic control following the introduction of dapagliflozin, fasting glucose levels remained above target. The addition of Momordica charantia extract (500 mg twice daily) resulted in significant improvements in fasting glucose and HbA1c levels, with values decreasing from 7.6% to 6.5% over 12 months. No adverse effects were reported, and the patient expressed high satisfaction with the treatment outcome.
Conclusions. This case supports the use of Momordica charantia as a safe and effective adjunct to standard antidiabetic regimens for improving glycemic control in T2DM patients. Larger clinical trials are warranted to validate these findings and establish its role in routine diabetes care.
