Between 19 – 21st of May 2016, in Suceava, Romania, took place the 5th edition of the conference “Medical Days of Suceava”.
The conference was organized by the College of Physicians of Suceava, in partnership with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Gr.T. Popa “, Iasi, and under the aegis of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania. On this occasion, on 19th of May 2016, the Romanian national section of Balkan Medical Union (BMU) has organized, in Suceava, a course on “Early diagnosis of cancer”.
The course directors were Prof. Dr. Daniela Bartos (president of the Romanian national section of BMU) and Dr. Camelia Diaconu (secretary general of the Romanian national section of BMU). The local organizing committee was represented by Dr. Ioan Ietcu (president of the Suceava branch of BMU) and Dr. Doina Ganea Motan, head of the oncology department of Suceava County Hospital, old member of the Suceava branch of BMU. The course was organized under the aegis of University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” from Bucharest. Dr. Ioan Ietcu had an essential role in organizing the course, being actively involved, with a lot of dedication, in ensuring a warm welcome in Suceava for the representatives of the Romanian national section of BMU.
At the beginning of the event, Dr. Camelia Diaconu, general secretary of the Romanian national section of BMU, has presented a brief history of the BMU, since its founding in 1932 in Bucharest, mentioning the main objectives of this organization, as well as its humanitarian and humanist message, “Santé – Amitié – Paix”, under which operate the national sections of BMU from almost all Balkan countries: Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Turkey. Dr. Camelia Diaconu paid tribute to former and current leadership of BMU, recalling that the current International Secretary General of BMU is Prof. Vasile Sarbu (Constanta).
It was stressed out that BMU has a long collaborative medical scientific relationship with the National Academy of Medicine of France from Paris, where the last BMU congress took place, in September 2015, at the invitation of the Academy of Medicine. Dr. Camelia Diaconu has appreciated the activity of Suceava branch of BMU, which was founded in 1978, but was effectively organized only in 1984, including 24 members. The activity of Suceava subsidiary was intense, its members actively participating with scientific papers at BMU congresses organized in Athens, Patras, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Istanbul, Ankara, Tirana, Mamaia, Sofia, Belgrade, Chisinau, Cluj, Cyprus, Madeira, Nancy, Baltics, Satu Mare etc.
Dr. Ioan Ietcu successfully led this branch for many years. It was also mentioned that BMU publishes the journal “Archives of the Balkan Medical Union”, indexed in international databases, the members from Suceava being invited to publish their articles in this journal and to further support the activity of the Suceava subsidiary. They were invited to participate to the 34th Balkan Medical Week, which will take place in Bucharest, between October 7 – 8, 2016.
